Possibly, but in general the ASIC for the trackpad would be on the trackpad itself, with a cable for power and data back to some main board. I'd also expect such a trackpad to be located to the right of the keyboard, which is the other side from U3.Maybe U3 was going to be a trackpad chip, for a trackpad in the same housing, like the rather nice Logitech K400 plus ?Unlikely. It's probably for a proposed feature that was deemed unnecessary or too expensive, or didn't work. ...... Other speculative reasons can be suggested.
Interestingly, some of the traces from the keyboard FFC go to the U3 footprint. Maybe a resistive touchpad, or trackpoint?
