Actually I was just looking on pimoroni and they are saying the WD black drive is is phison controlled drive and it works with pi 5.girlintrouble, I've been playing with pi's for years, but am also new to nvme on pi.
Be aware that nvme drives with phison controllers have compatibility problems with pi.
I got the geekworn x1000 nvme hat and found out both of the spare nvme drives I have use phison controllers
Western Digital SN740 SDDPTQD-256G-1012 has a Phison controller and works fine on PC, but will not boot on Pi.
Phison PSELN128GA87MC0 drive will boot from cold start, but if I try to restart my Pi, I have to pull and reinsert power to get it to boot again.

May depend on the base? I’m not knowledgeable to say.
I’m guessing there must be a list on here somewhere of what spec to look for for Nvme but I haven’t seen it yet

Anyhow my questions were a bit different
